1962 U.S. Elektions
On November 6, 1962, millions of United States citizens will exercise once again their democratic prerotive of voting into office political candidates of their choise.
The U.S. Constitution specifies that each state of the Union shall be granted seats in the House of Represantives in numbers proportionate to its population although each state is entitled to at least one representative regardless of population. Members of the House are elected by direct popular vote for two-year terms every two years. Each state is also represented by two senators elected for six-year terms, about one third of the seats in the Senate being filled every two years.
At stake in this year´s elections are 435 seats in the House of representatives, 39 seats in the senate and 35 state governorships. Nationwide attention is focused on the gubernatorial contests in such heavily - populaten key states as New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan and California- areas from wich the Republican Party´s candidate for president may come in 1964.
Interest in the 1962 elections is further heigthtened by the fact that both President John F. Kennedy and his Republican predecessor, General Dwight D. Eisenhower actively campaigned across the country in behalf of their respective parties candidates. The outcome will determine whether the Democratic Party retains its numerical majority in both houses of congress, or if the Republican minority will gein seats in the traditonal pattern of U. S. politics during a non- presidential election year.
